This Just In - Opportunity in ColombiaColombia, in case all you know about the country is "cocaine," is a big nation. It is the 26th largest nation in the world, and has a population of over 44 million people. It borders both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and sports a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of $366 billion. This is not some tiny, out-of-the way island in the Australian Antarctic, OK? Today, just minutes ago, Colombia had a nationwide power failure. That is to say, the power grid reportedly failed and 44 million people, at least the ones who had power to begin with, lost it. An excerpt from the AP story appears below.
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP)
-- A nationwide blackout hit Colombia on Thursday, with
authorities struggling to determine the cause of the electrical grid's
collapse. President Alvaro Uribe told journalists in the southern city
of Cali that authorities would "know in a few minutes" the cause of the
blackout, which took place at about 10:15 a.m. local time. He said
the blackout "appears to have affected the entire country." I know there are people who like to read news stories while keeping in mind potential opportunities to get rich. I might even be one of them. Although this one isn't for me—I don't have the resources required—clearly some industrial group has important negotiating to do. If I were Otis or ThyssenKrupp or Schindler or KONE or any of the lesser manufacturers, I'd hie myself down to Colombia instantly. Clearly this country of 44 million is in desperate need of more elevators! NP: "Film Star" - Mulu |
